MechaSource has been in development since 2007. It started with the creation of Royale 2, a sequel to the popular game MFGG Royale. Royale 2 was a fighting game that was semi-renowned for it's customizability. It featured a simple platform engine that was later remade into the an early scratch of the MechaSource engine. MechaSource was originally called MechaShare, then later changed to Mechasource.

On August 22, MechaSource was introduced to the public. Fairly simple with a horrible design. The engine for the first time runs on the Lua scripting language, which was a completely new direction compared to previously.

During 2009 MechaSource really began to take off. The MFGG Topic, which was initially created in 2008, continued to grow as Mecha the Slag continued to release tantalizing previews and details about MechaSource. The release date is currently foggily set in the year 2010, and it remains to be seen whether the engine is indeed released. On September 18th, members that signed up for the MechaSource Vanilla Beta SDK program were chosen at random to participate as a beta tester of the MechaSource Vanilla Beta SDK.

In 2010, the graphics engine was ported from DirectX to OpenGL to allow for faster and more advanced rendering. This also allows 3D game creation. With the new render, engines were renamed to the more appropriate apis.
